Navigation & Orienteering Training

l Do you feel uncomfortable about taking your Unit into new locations?
l Do you want to improve your navigation and route-finding skills?
l Have you considered orienteering as an activity for improving your Scouts’                     
       map and compass skills?

A workshop and field experience in navigation and orienteering will be conducted by the members of LAAC-HAT, in association with the Los Angeles Orienteering Club, on November 13, 14 at the Firestone Scout Reservation. We will begin Saturday with a discussion of the tools of navigation and strategies for their utilization. Topics will include (but are not limited to) GPS, collecting terrain features, disoriented/lost, etc. We will also discuss Orienteering Events; how they are run and why they are useful in route-finding and off-trail navigation. These activities will be followed by participant-led map-hikes which use the detailed Orienteering map for Firestone. After Saturday night’s potluck dinner, we will organize a “Night-O”, which will emphasize techniques for getting un-lost. Participants will help officiate in an LAOC Orienteering meet on Sunday.

Registration by 1 November is required, as space is limited. The fee is $20 per person, by check made payable to the LAOC. This fee covers camping overnight at Firestone, in addition to the LAOC program. Each person must provide his/her own food and camping gear.
